The concrete barge has been moored at the end of the Marina wharf since 1994. The barge serves as a wave attenuator, protecting the boats moored at the Marina wharf from instances of strong wind from the west.

The barge was originally built as a Navy Ammunition Lighter, and never possessed an aesthetical appeal.

In 2013 we started a project to transform the barge into a workshop and to improve her visual appearance.

July 1987. Spectacle Island surrounded by Concrete Ammunition Lighters.

The barge was originally build as a lighter ("a large, open, flat-bottomed barge, used in loading or unloading ships and in transporting goods for short distances". Category: Nautical, Navy).

The Killcare Marina’s Concrete Ammunition Lighter (Concrete Barge) CAL102 was among the lighters constructed during 1943-1945 by the Timms Bridge Construction Co., Tasmania and towed to Sydney by various means.

Navy Office Plan

Originally the barge was equipped with a powerful crane which served us well for many years.

However, these days the crane became non-compliant, and we were forced to ban its use, and dismantled it in February 2012.

Now the barge is equipped with a small and compact crane we installed for removing / installing motors.
